Sub-genres in Thrillers. Conspiracy thrillers

Conspiracy thriller.

Conspiracy thrillers is one of the most popular sub-genres within thrillers. A typical conspiracy thriller is when a journalist (usually an amateur or in university) finds a link to a crime which escalated into a major crime investigation. A common theme in conspiracy thrillers in such that the character unraveling the conspiracy will find trouble and difficulty ahead. Most of the time this is from the "baddies" in the film.

Northbynorthwest1.jpgAn example of this is in the quintessential Hitchcock film, North by Northwest (1959), in which Cary Grant, who plays a Manhattan advertisement executive, is mistaken for a spy by agents of a mysterious organization, whom believe that he is interfering with their plan to smuggle out microfilm containing government secrets.

Some of the greatest ever conspiracy thrillers include:

  • Angles and Demons (2009)
  • The Bourne Identity (2002)
  • Marathon Man (1976)
  • The Da Vinci Code (2006)
